YUuth Group - 11-17 years

Our yUUth Group gets together on the third Friday of every month for dinner (usually take-out) plus games, music, and art - whatever we decide we want to do. Sometimes we'll have a special guest visiting, but we can always bring extra friends along. Maybe you'd like to join us.
Are you:
  • 11-17 years old?
  • Wanting to explore your own spirituality with people your age?
  • Interested in social hang-outs with peers who share your values?

Our next hangout is Friday, February 17, at 6pm, downstairs in Room 6.
We'll be having a games night an building our own chicken/veggie wraps.
Need a ride?
Email us and we'll help you out.

Coming of Age at FirstU

For the most part, children identify with the faith beliefs of their parents and family but, as you move out of childhood, you start to develop your own perspectives on the nature of the world and your places in it. At FirstU, the Coming of Age program gives people ages 12-14 the time and space to deeply explore those unique beliefs. It signals the beginning of individual spiritual searching, and is an official recognition that you've begun to search for personal truth.

Our spiritual identities can grow and change over time. Maybe you already have some fairly concrete ideas about the nature of the cosmos and your place in it, and would like the opportunity to dig more deeply into those thoughts. Maybe you're just starting to dip your toes into exploring what all of this might mean.
Either way, this program is for you, so you can explore and develop your personal truths in a supportive group setting in a supportive environment with people your own age.

How It Works
Coming of Age starts on February 12, 2023 and runs through the end of April. Over the course of the program, you'll be paired with a mentor and, through retreats, workshops, guest speaker visits, and discussions, you'll develop your personal understanding of what YOU believe.
At the end of the program, you'll get to put those beliefs into words – or dance or music – as an individual statement of your faith.

Interested?
Registration for Coming of Age 2023 is now closed, but if you'd like to take part in Coming of Age next time it runs, please email dre@firstunitarianottawa.
A collage of four photos: Clockwise from top left: A marquee over a doorway in New York City. A speaker in front of an overhead screen, speaks to teens who lounge in pews and on the floor. A casual Sanctuary filled with people singing, viewed from the back of the room. An outdoor view of a statue surrounded by early spring bluebells.
A photo of a very formal church service in a fancy church where all the pews, walls, and columns are white.
A young woman in a basement doing an interpretive dance.
A teen wearing glasses and a black hoodie, lying on their stomach painting a colourful banner.
A collage of two photos separated by a wavy white line. Top: A young Black person, speaking in front of a stained glass window of two fists.. Bottom: An older Black adult speaking to a crowd from a stage draped in grey curtains.
A collage of three photos. Clockwise from top left: A teen, all in black, at a bowling lane. A christian cross at the front of an unfamiliar church. Teens gathered in a basement looking incredibly tired. There are filing cabinets in the background.
A collage of five photos, each one portraying one or more teens speaking at what may be a mock UN meeting? There are light-up name tags and delicate mics in front of each teen. The middle photo is a view from behind, and the room looks very full.
Stacks of colourful cards that look like they're part of a table-top roll playing game. They appear next to an improvised Chalice: a lit tealight candle burning in a ceramic bowl.

"We acknowledge that our campus is located on traditional, unsurrendered and unceded Algonquin Anishinabeg Territory;
and that the work of reconciliation is a responsibility of our congregation, and of all Canadians.  "Our goal is to educate ourselves and all
who have ears to hear, to be of service to those who are at risk, and to advocate for justice.
