The Problem of Food Waste

Food waste is serious problem increasing both global warming and social injustice. 58% of food produced in Canada is wasted. It represents a huge wastage of power, water, chemicals, packaging and human effort throughout the food chain. In the landfills it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that it 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Meanwhile 4.4 million people are food insecure and this has increased during the pandemic.
