Richmond Road Closure (2024-2027)
As of Saturday, July 20, 2024, traffic will not be able to travel along Richmond Road until the end of 2027.
Instead, traffic will be diverted to Byron Avenue.
Below, you'll find maps showing how to enter and exit our campus using the new detour.

Some specifics of how this affects access to the FirstU campus:
- We are still using the "Kristy Restaurant" detour for entry to and exit from the campus
- The configuration of Richmond Road and Byron Avenue near Cleary Avenue will change multiple times due to LRT construction in the months ahead
- Vehicles will only be able to enter or leave our campus using Richmond Road's westbound lane. Eastbound traffic on Richmond around Cleary will be rerouted onto Byron Avenue (see maps above and below for details)
- There will always be a way in and out of our campus, but your route may change; please watch for updated signage
Questions You May Have
1. When will the first Richmond Rd reconfiguration start? As early as Monday, July 22, 2024
2. How will east-bound vehicles get into/out of Cleary? As of July 19, this information hasn't been made available to the staff at FirstU. However our best guess is that there will be a left-turn lane from westbound Richmond to eastbound Byron, and vice versa.
3. Where will be the closest eastbound/westbound bus stops? The westbound bus stop is unlikely the change. The eastbound stop may be relocated to Byron. Details will be provided as we receive them.
4. How will pedestrians get to Cleary from Byron? As of July 19, this information hasn't been made available to the staff at FirstU. Details will be provided as we receive them.
5. Can we get more advance notice of future reconfigurations? FirstU will update our detour information as early as we can to provide as much lead-time as possible to you. Nobody likes a surprise detour, least of all us. We've asked the city to be more proactive in providing information to people who live and worship at FirstU and the surrounding neighbourhoods but, ultimately, the information we receive happens on their timeline. We'll do our best to get the word out in a timely fashion.

cleary avenue detour (2022-2024)
The construction of Ottawa's expanded Light-Rail Transit (LRT) corridor will have a noticeable impact on our campus!
The tracks will go right underneath the intersection of Cleary Avenue and Richmond Road. As a result, Cleary Avenue will be closed at that intersection for about two years during excavation. To accommodate us, the City will construct a temporary detour entrance to our Cleary campus - opening mid-November - via our upper parking lot and through Kristy's. The construction will include signage, a pedestrian walkway from the detour intersection to Unitarian House, and a traffic light at Richmond Road. |
Construction for this detour is scheduled to begin in mid-September 2022 until the end of October 2022.
The Cleary Avenue detour will be in place from mid-November, 2022 to September 2024.
Over the two year detour period, you'll be able to find updates about the detour and related construction impacts on our campus right here on this page.
