justice and equality action group

The Justice and Equality Action Group is an amalgamation of three smaller groups focused, respectively, on Global Justice, Poverty, FirstU's participation in Unitarian Universalists at the United Nations. The group’s mandate is to educate itself and the community about situations of injustice and inequitable treatment of people, and to work to establish justice and equality. We encourage congregational members to  deliberate on issues of social justice, advocate for social change, and join with other people of faith and goodwill.
We maintain a connection with and promote the work of the UU United Nations Office (UU-UNO), participate in local actions and campaigns such as Multifaith Housing Initiative's Tulipathon fundraiser and Dignity For All's annual
Chew On This! food security campaign, and raise funds for our various projects through annual gift sales of fair trade luxury and household products.

Local Action

Chew On This!
Monday, October 17 - 12:30pm
Parliament Hill

"Poverty and food insecurity are both violations of our inherent human rights, caused by intersecting systems of oppression in our society. Our chances of being food insecure are strongly tied to Indigeneity, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, family status, immigration status, and geography.  But it does not have to be this way."

FirstU's Justice and Equality Action Group will be at Dignity For All's Chew On This! rally on Parliament Hill this Monday, October 17th. Join us there for poetry, art-making, and to hear speakers on the subject of food security in Ottawa and across the country.

Take Action:
We encourage you to make a personal donation (money, not canned goods) to the Ottawa Food  Bank, and remind everyone that people in Ottawa are hungry and food insecure all year long, not just at Thanksgiving: Monthly donations go a long way to help our neighbours keep their cupboards full.

UU-UNO News and events

Picture
"The UU@UNO brings UU values to the United Nations. We advocate for issues important to UUs, such as equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people; peacemaking efforts; anti-racism work; opportunities for women and children; and mitigation of climate change. The UU@UNO focuses on these key issues at the UN and promotes action in UU congregations.

Current programs include the Global Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI) Human Rights Initiative, the Every Child is Our Child program in Ghana, the Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Initiative, the Climate Justice Initiative, and the Racial Justice Initiative."
UUA UU-UNO

"The Unitarian Universalist Association Office at the United Nations is a non-governmental organization in association with the United Nations Department of Global Communications and in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The UUA Office at the UN represents the UUA and the Canadian Unitarian Council at the United Nations, where we promote the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all, as reflected in the United Nations Charter. Through targeted education, advocacy, and outreach, we engage Unitarian Universalists in support of international cooperation and the work of the UN."

"We acknowledge that our campus is located on traditional, unsurrendered and unceded Algonquin Anishinabeg Territory;
and that the work of reconciliation is a responsibility of our congregation, and of all Canadians.  "Our goal is to educate ourselves and all
who have ears to hear, to be of service to those who are at risk, and to advocate for justice.
