Social Justice
Unitarian Universalism has a long history of social action for peace and justice and for helping helpless, poor, sick, and marginalized people at home and around the world.
Groups Acting at the Local Level
Mental Illness Working Group:
was formed to support the Ancoura supportive-housing initiative for people living with mental illness. This group also works to bring greater awareness of the problems that face those living with a mental illness and to counter the stigma associated with this illness.
Parkdale Food Centre Contributors: Our congregation makes weekly donations of food collected at services and events.
Poverty Awareness Working Group: We create awareness in the congregation and take action on poverty and affordable housing issues.
Refugee Working Group: We facilitate the settlement of individual refugees and/or families through such tasks as arrangements for housing, banking, schooling and health issues.
Groups Acting at the Global Level
Canada-Nepal Solidarity for Peace: We work to support democracy and human rights in Nepal, provide counselling for Nepalese immigrants and refugees in Canada, and raise funds for destitute women and children in Nepal.
Child Haven Working Group: We help and promote Child Haven, a local charity, run nine projects for over 1,000 destitute and orphaned children and women in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Tibet.
Global Justice Working Group: We encourage congregational members to deliberate on issues of social justice, advocate for social change, and join with other people of faith and goodwill.
Peace Watch Working Group: We bring peace and disarmament issues/events to the attention of the congregation through activities such as guest speakers, petitions and letter-writing, participation in local events, and activities with other groups.
Unitarian GoGos Working Group: We work to raise awareness and funds in support of grassroots initiatives of grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa, who are raising millions for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
UU-United Nations Office Working Group: We assist our congregation in learning about and participating in major United Nations issues such as human rights, peace, equity, and the environment.
